Alternative Medicine Treatment of High Cholesterol and Triglycerides PDF Print E-mail

The recommended treatment for most cases of high cholesterol and high triglycerides is diet and exercise.  When diet and exercise fails, most physicians prescribe drugs called statins.  I do not use statins.  Statins have a long list of side effects, which most patients do not read.

What is the cause of elevated triglyceride(fat) and cholesterol?  The majority of patients eat too many carbohydrates and too much bad fat.  Fat is the storage form of carbohydrates.  When you eat more carbohydrates then your body can store as glycogen in the liver and muscles, the liver changes the carbohydrate into fat to store for future use.  The fat has to be transported to the fat cells in an envelope of cholesterol.  There are different types of cholesterol from very low density to high density cholesterol.  Cholesterol can be pictured as many different sizes of trucks carrying the bags of fat to the warehouse.

 

             The typical treatment is to give pills to reduce the number of trucks that transport the fat to the warehouse.  Would the best treatment be to limit the amount of fat needed to be stored?  Cutting out refined carbohydrates and bad fat will reduce the need for more tucks (Cholesterol) to transport because there will be less fat produced.  Exercise will burn the fat that is in storage.             Follow this healthy way to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides.1.      Reduce bad carbs by ½ the first two weeks, then by 2/3 over the next few months.  Then recheck your blood levels.  If the levels are acceptable, you should continue to eat the same lower amounts.  If the levels are not acceptable, cut down a little more.2.      Take fish oil/cod liver oil with Omega 3 fatty acid.  One tablespoon a day, or capsules equal to about 3,000 mg a day is a good dose.  There are several good citrus flavored brands.  The usual large capsule has 300mg. DHA/EPA per capsule.  Don’t be miss lead by the label on the front that reads 1,000.  If you chose the capsules over the liquid form, take at least three capsules three times a day.  3.      Take a good multivitamin with minerals.4.      Ask your doctor to check your thyroid function with TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and Anti-TPO.5.      Stop consuming bad and ugly fat (Trans fat, hydrogenated fat or vegetable oil), fried foods, fatty meats, and rancid meats. Margarine is a bad fat, butter is a good fat.  Olive oil is also good, but should not be used in high heat cooking.  A good cooking oil is coconut oil.6.      Take antioxidants, and liver support supplements such as alpha lipoic acid. 7.      Do not take statins.  They block the co-enzyme Q10 pathway and interfere with cellular function.  They also cause muscle rupture.  Read the package insert, Statins can kill you.8.      Strength training exercise and mild aerobic exercise is recommended.  Do not over exercise, you will produce free radicals that damage your cells.9.      L-carnitine, chromium, DHEA, curcumin, fiber, garlic, pectin, niacin, gugulipid, policosanol, and tocotrienols are also helpful.  10.  Check for hereditary problems, such as hemochromatosis, gum disease, and diabetes mellitus.The body produces cholesterol for use in cell wall structure and hormone synthesis.  Oxidized cholesterol is bad for you.  Egg yoke is pure cholesterol.  When consumed, the cholesterol exerts the same effect as statins to block the HMG-CoA reductase and makes less cholesterol.  But, eggs do not cause the muscle tears that statins do.  You may safely enjoy eggs.
