I. Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Scriptures give us various titles applied to the Holy Spirit: - Spirit of the Sovereign Lord. “The Sovereign Lord (Almighty God) has filled me with his Spirit,” (Is 61:1).
- Spirit of your Father. “For the words you will speak will not be yours; they will come from the Spirit of your Father (God Almighty) speaking through you,” (Mt. 10:20).
- Spirit of Truth. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit, who reveals the Truth about God,” (Jn 14:16-17).
- Spirit of Life. “For the law of the Spirit, which brings us life in union with Christ Jesus, has set me free from the law of sin and death,” (Rom 8:2).
- Spirit of Christ. “Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him,” (Rom 8:9).
- Spirit of God. “If the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from death, lives in you, then he who raised Christ from death will also give life to your mortal bodies by the presence of his Spirit in you,” (Rom 8:11).
- Spirit of his Son. “To show that you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who cries out, “Father, my Father,” (Gal 4:6).
- Glorious Spirit. “Happy are you if you are insulted because you are Christ’s followers; this means that the Glorious Spirit, the Spirit of God, is resting on you,” (I Pet 4:14).
- Holy Spirit. “O God, do not banish me from your presence; do not take your Holy Spirit away from me,” (Ps 51:11).
- Eternal Spirit. “Through the Eternal Spirit he offered himself as a perfect sacrifice to God.
II. Is this Holy Spirit “God”? To be continued by Bert Castro, PhD, St. James Prayer Group Leader. When we recite the Apostles’ Creed, we profess our belief in the Holy Spirit, source and giver of life. |
