Classical music goes contemporary with the Philippines’ first all-male classical-pop tenor group, Angelos. Made up of singers George Sison-Tagle, Floyd Tena, James Uy and Jon Joven, they come from different backgrounds in singing and performing Classical, Broadway and Pop music. However, they are one in the dream of bringing the appreciation of classical music closer to the general Filipino audience through the classical-pop genre.
Angelos has also been invited to grace special events such as the launch of Travelife Magazine, the BREW Awards of BizNews Asia magazine, the Aficionado Germany Celebrity Perfume launch, the Walk of Fame Unveiling Ceremonies at Eastwood, the Mandarin Oriental Suites Opening at Gateway Mall and the People Asia Magazine “People of the Year” Awards Night. The repertoire of Angelos includes popular and romantic songs rendered in a classical manner, plus well-loved Filipino ballads and classics. Members of the media who have seen their performances have dubbed the group, the “Asian Il Divo” because of their Filipino/Asian looks coupled with the singing talent that can compare to international performers. This 2008, shows lined up for the group include “Angelos: An Evening Serenade” at Teatrino on January 17, “Our Love Affair” back-to-back concert with the Spirit of ’67 band on February 12, and two shows on Valentine’s Day, February 14 – at the Peninsula Manila with Ivy Violan and Nanette Inventor and at the Makati Shangri-La back-to-back with Kuh Ledesma. GEORGE SISON-TAGLE George Sison-Tagle, known as the “singing painter”, is the son of renowned painter E.R. Tagle and philanthropist/producer Beth Sison-Tagle. An artist in his own right, having had his own share of exhibits here and abroad since 1995, George was inclined to classical music at a young age. He received his classical music training from mentors such as the late Al Mendoza of the Ryan Cayabyab Music School, Abet de los Reyes, Nolyn Cabahug, and Philippine Opera Company founders Jay Greyoso and Karla Gutierrez. Currently, he is taking lessons with premiere soprano Rachelle Gerodias. As a solo artist, George has performed in various shows alongside the likes of Ivy Violan, Dulce, Janet Basco, Jinky Llamanzares and other notable singers. He performed as Prince Tamino in Mozart’s opera, “The Magic Flute”, produced by the Philippine Opera Company and was a special performer during the NCCA Cultural Summit in 2005 where he performed “Kurakot”, the winning song of the 2005 NCCA Songwriting contest. In 2004, George was nominated Best New Artist at the Aliw Awards. In September 2007, he launched his self-titled light CD which includes original compositions by Vehnee Saturno such as “Sa Panaginip Ko”, “Make You Mine Again”, “You’re Supposed to Love Me”, ”Give You All My Love” and a classical-pop revival of Jaya’s “Dahil Tanging Ikaw”. According to Saturno, George has the distinction of being the first solo classical singer in the country to ever record a classical-pop album. FLOYD TENA Floyd Tena, a Bicolano, is a product of the Ateneo de Naga Music Ministry where he often sang as a soloist. After graduating from a course in Development Communication, civic-minded Floyd joined the Jesuit Volunteers Philippines (JVP) and worked as a senior coalition builder helping farmers in Compostela Valley, Mindanao with paralegal services. He does freelance consultancy on Marketing, Events, Brand Management, Product Development and Corporate (Behavioral and Skills) Training. With a keen interest in arts and culture, Floyd also dabbled in dance and musical theater as a member of Teatro Dignos and played the role of Andres Bonifacio in the centennial presentation dubbed “josebonifacioandresrizal”. He has been playing classical guitar (left-handedly) since his grade school days. A radio talent, he regularly gets invited as host or singer in various formal and corporate functions. Floyd is also a commercial model, having done print and TV ads for companies such as Smart, Eight O' Clock and Rustan's Fresh. He counts the Madrigal Singers, Bukas Palad, Himig Heswita, Basil Valdez and Andrea Bocelli as among his musical influences, and loves to discover beautiful music from unsigned artists. JAMES UY James Uy is a fresh face to professional singing. The youngest member of Angelos at only 22 years old, James is a graduate of Computer Information Systems at the Heritage College in Nevada, USA. While in the US, he joined and landed the runner-up position in the Las Vegas Pinoy Pop Superstar singing competition. He discovered his passion for singing at 5, watching his older brother Jon Joven sing and perform Broadway classics. During high school at Lourdes School in Quezon City, James bagged the lead role in the school’s original play, “Manora”, and has represented the school in several singing competitions. Being a “techie”, James enjoys tinkering with computers, and plays basketball and table tennis. James has also had solo vocalist and choir experience, and has done minor stage performances here and abroad, usually guesting at concerts of other Filipino performers such as Mykel Laygo and “Miss Saigon” US alumnus Johnny Fernandez. JON JOVEN Broadway singer Jon Joven has had extensive Broadway experience for the past 10 years. Joven was part of the “Miss Saigon” production in Germany where he played Thuy and “My Fair Lady” in the US where he played Freddy Einsford Hill. He was also part of the ensemble of the US productions of “South Pacific” and “West Side Story” in Wichita, Kansas. On local stage, he was part of “Himala” the musical where he played the principal role of Orly and “Noli Me Tangere” where he played Crisostomo Ibarra. He received the first Academy Special Citation for theatrical excellence from the Famas Awards in 2004 and was nominated Best Actor in a Musical Play (Noli Me Tangere) at the 2005 Aliw Awards. At the 2006 World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood, California, Joven won several medals including one Gold for Broadway, two Silvers for Pop and Opera and one plaque for Overall Champion Male Solo for Broadway. |
